For a very long time, I have been annoyed with the finale of HP and the Chamber of secrets because of the timely actions of Fawkes showing up with the Sorting Hat who, surprise, produced the sword that Harry used to kill the Basilisk. To me Rowling had just pulled a huge Deus Ex Machina to save Harry from a dead end plot. Reading that book again with all the books out, especially for HP and the Half Blood Prince, I’ve been trying to solve some of its mysteries, I became determined to figure out what’s with that sword.
